Privacy Summary
TL;DR: JSON Brace operates entirely on your device. We do not collect, store, or
transmit any personal data. All JSON processing happens locally, whether you open a file in the app or view
JSON in Safari. Only essential settings are stored locally so that JSON Brace works as expected.
Overview
JSON Brace ("JSON Brace", "we", "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy covers everything we
ship: the JSON Brace apps for iOS and macOS, and the JSON Brace extension for Safari. All of them run entirely on
your device and do not collect, store, or transmit any personal data to external servers.
Key Privacy Principle: All functionality is performed locally on your device. Your JSON data
never leaves your device and is never transmitted to any external servers or third parties.
Data Collection
We want to be completely transparent about what data JSON Brace does and does not collect:
What We DO NOT Collect
- Personal Information: We do not collect names, email addresses, phone numbers, or any other
personally identifiable information
- JSON Data: We do not access, store, or transmit any JSON content you open in the app or view
in Safari
- Your Files: Files you open stay on your device. We never upload them, copy them, or read
files you have not opened yourself
- Browsing Activity: We do not track your browsing history, visited websites, or online
behavior
- Usage Analytics: We do not collect analytics data about how you use JSON Brace
- Location Data: We do not access or collect your geographic location
- Account Information: We do not require registration or account creation
What We DO Store Locally
JSON Brace stores minimal settings data locally on your device, using the secure storage APIs provided by the
system, to ensure proper functionality.
The apps for iOS and macOS store:
- Display Settings: Your theme choice, whether to show preview information, and your preferred
default level for expanding JSON structures
- Recent Files: The names and locations of files you have opened, so you can reopen them from
the Recent list. The contents of those files are not stored
- Open Tabs: Which files were open when you last quit, so your tabs are restored on the next
launch
- Purchase Status: Whether you own JSON Brace Pro, and the date of the purchase, as reported
by the App Store. This is a local cache of your receipt, used to unlock Pro features offline
The Safari extension stores:
- Display Settings: Theme, preview information, and default expansion level
- Extension State: Temporary information about whether JSON content is detected on the current
page
Important: All locally stored data remains on your device and is never transmitted anywhere.
This data is only used to remember your preferences and ensure JSON Brace works as expected.
How JSON Brace Works
JSON Brace processes all data locally using client-side JavaScript. The same viewer powers the apps and the
extension. Here's how it operates:
- Opening Files: In the app, JSON is read from the file you choose, or from the file you open
in JSON Brace from another app. Nothing is read without your action
- Content Detection: In Safari, the extension inspects the page you are viewing to identify
JSON content
- Local Processing: All JSON parsing, formatting, syntax highlighting, and tree view
generation happens entirely on your device
- Display Enhancement: JSON Brace only changes how JSON is displayed, without sending data
elsewhere
Permissions We Request
In the Apps
- File Access: The apps can only read the files you explicitly open, either through the file
picker or by opening a file in JSON Brace from another app. The system grants access to those files only.
When you use "Save JSON", the system asks you where to write the file
In the Safari Extension
- Access to All Websites (*://*/*): Required to detect and format JSON content on any website
you visit
- Storage Permission: Used exclusively to save your preferences locally (theme, display
settings, etc.)
- Active Tab Permission: Allows the extension to know which tab has JSON content and
enable/disable the extension icon accordingly
- Scripting Permission: Enables the extension to inject the JSON formatting code into web
pages
Transparency Note: While the extension requests access to all websites, it only activates
and processes content when JSON data is detected. It does not monitor or collect information from non-JSON
pages.
Data Security
Since we do not collect or transmit any data, there are no external data security risks associated with using
JSON Brace. However, we implement several security best practices:
- Local Processing Only: All operations are performed locally, eliminating network-based
security risks
- No External Connections: JSON Brace makes no network requests with your data. It contains
no analytics, no advertising, and no remote code
- Sandboxed by Design: The apps run in the system sandbox and can reach only the files you
open yourself
- Secure Storage: Local preferences are stored using the system's secure storage APIs
- Content Security: The extension follows Safari's security guidelines and content security
policies
Third-Party Services
JSON Brace does not integrate with, connect to, or share data with any third-party services, analytics
platforms, advertising networks, or external APIs.
The only third-party interaction occurs through:
- Apple App Store: Distribution of JSON Brace is handled by Apple's App Store, which is
governed by Apple's Privacy Policy
- Apple In-App Purchases: The purchase of JSON Brace Pro is processed entirely by Apple. We
never see or receive your payment details
- Safari Browser: The extension operates within Safari's framework and follows Safari's
privacy and security protocols
Your Privacy Rights
Since we do not collect personal data, traditional data privacy rights (such as data access, rectification, or
deletion requests) do not apply. However, you maintain complete control over JSON Brace:
- Settings Control: You can modify or reset all preferences at any time, in the app's settings
panel or in the extension's popup
- Recent Files and Tabs: You can clear the Recent list and close tabs at any time
- Disable the Extension: You can disable or remove the Safari extension at any time through
Safari's Extensions settings
- Clear Local Data: Removing JSON Brace will automatically clear all locally stored
preferences
Children's Privacy
JSON Brace is safe for users of all ages. Since we do not collect any personal information, there are no
special privacy concerns related to children's use of it.
International Users
JSON Brace complies with major international privacy regulations including GDPR (European Union), CCPA
(California), and other regional privacy laws by design, since no personal data is collected or processed.
Updates to This Privacy Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for other operational,
legal, or regulatory reasons. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date.
Since JSON Brace does not collect personal data, most changes would likely be clarifications or updates to
reflect new features that maintain our privacy-first approach.
Final Privacy Commitment
JSON Brace is designed with privacy as a fundamental principle. We believe that powerful, useful
tools can be created without compromising user privacy. Your JSON data stays on your device, your browsing
remains private, and your trust in JSON Brace is never taken for granted.
